Sorry for the ‘test’ posts, RSS readers.

WP to Twitter is apparently broken for me, so I’ve been trying to get Twitter Tools going.  It was working, but wasn’t using bit.ly shortened URLs.  Going into my bit.ly account, doing a reset on the key and updating that in Twitter Tools settings appears to have done the trick.

Twitter Tools don’t have as many features, but it will get the job done until WP to Twitter gets fixed.

I also wanted to make this post to make sure it’s still working without another ‘Test’ post :)

…just thought I’d give it a try. Not bad, but I’ll stick to the PC.

That wasn’t too bad…

Posted by Jon | Announcements | Thursday 4 February 2010 3:02 pm

I’m sure you’ve probably noticed that for most of the day the site has been under maintenance, down, or maybe even serving up various PHP guts…I don’t know.  Downtime is now over.

I decided that I didn’t have to transfer my domain to get on the new host…I just created an add-on domain and redirected the nameservers to my new InMotion Hosting account.  Waiting for my old host to propogate the DNS changes is where the majority of the wait has been…I finished moving the site several hours ago.

I did a little behind-the-scenes cleanup of the ImagesByName and Downloads file folders, so if you encounter any broken downloads, please let me know…I manually edited all of their new locations, so I could have hit commited a typo or two.  In fact, if you see anything around the site misbehaving, please let me know about it via the Contact Form.

Update:

It took quite a bit longer than 8 hours for the DNS to change like my previous host had stated.  Sorry about that.  Aside from that, things appear to be working well.  I’m just now fixing my email accounts so that they make use of the new MX records and am receiving my first round of ‘bug reports’.  Please continue to send those in using the Contact Me page if you find anything strange.  I will fix it right away.

I’ve already had one request for what I did to move this site…anyone else interested?  I think I can remember the most important points.  There honestly wasn’t a whole lot to it.

New host test success!

Posted by Jon | Announcements | Wednesday 3 February 2010 12:56 pm

I just finished the first stage in my quest to transfer this site to a new host with pretty good success.  I’ve decided to go with InMotion Hosting as I already have access to an available domain slot for transfer and they fit my needs well at the price point I’m looking at.

I figure at this point, I’ll just have to copy everything, change a few of the paths in my config files and then pick a date to start the domain transfer.  I expect to be down for at least a day or two during that time, but I believe it will be well worth it. So far, the test site (which partially mirrors this one), is very fast and at only 16% resource usage (compared to 42% here).

I will be sure to make periodic updates as I move forward.

Sick of this host.

Posted by Jon | Off Topic | Tuesday 2 February 2010 9:28 am

I’m so sick of my web host’s anemic memory allotment that I’ve finally decided to look elsewhere.  I’m not going to mention who it is (hint: =2), but 40MB of memory for a web platform in 2010 is just not enough.  Sure, I have unlimited bandwidth, 20 MySQL databases, 150GB of webspace, 2500 email accounts, 10 FTP accounts and on and on, but my single little WordPress install chews up 60% of the memory that I have.  That leaves me with ~16MB for any other project that I’d like to do…one of which includes a migration to Drupal.  I can’t test it, because I can’t import anything without choking on the amount of leftover memory I have.

I’m in the process now of forwarding a subdomain to a web host that I signed my mom up for over a year ago that is going unused.  It was going to be her online storefront for her B&M children’s store, but she hasn’t had the time to invest in taking pictures and whatnot to get things started.  I transferred her domain from ‘=2′ to InMotion Hosting almost immediately after purchasing due to resource inefficiencies.  I’m considering moving over there also.  They are a little skimpy in some areas, but have 256MB for their shared hosts.

In the meantime, I’m probably going to just fire up Uniform Server and do some local testing until ‘=2′ takes its customary forever-and-a-day to do its DNS updating voodoo.

I wish I had known more of what to look for when I went to find a hosting service, but hindsight is 20/20.
