  1. Lol… Are you kidding… What does you utility bill look like?

  2. Same as anyone else’s. If it’s not being used, it is turned off ya’know.

  3. Enviable…but all that and no 1080p-capable devices?

  4. Nice system you got there.
But i didnt understand how many pc you got in your home right now ? :)

    • 1 x pfsense firewall
      1 x unRAID
      1 x 2008 Server
      1 x ESXi Server (1 x Vista VM + 1x 2003 Server VM)
      1 x Personal system (C2Q)
      4 x HTPC
      3 X Laptops/Netbooks

      12 total systems.

  5. Hello!

I’m impressed with so many systems for a home use.
My curiosity is how much did you spend to achieve all this? Hardware + Software.
Are all your server systems up 24/7?
    And the electric bill! :)

    • It was never all at once, so I’m not sure how much it all cost in total. Most systems came about as upgrades were performed on my primary one – I re-use most everything that is serviceable. As far as software goes, not much. My Windows 7 copies all came about via MSDN and other Microsoft promotional programs, so they were practically free. The unRAID and WHS are 24/7. The electric bill isn’t impacted by the systems that much…my problem is A/C – Georgia is really hot this time of year!

  6. Just the thought of that much electricity consumption is scarry for me, I’m about 45 Mins North of Toronto and like most people in Ontario Canada, our electricity is now on what they call “Smart Meter” which means that we are now being charged based on a time of use sheme – on Monday to Friday, from 0700AM to 1900PM we pay a peak usage fee then fro 1900PM to 0700AM there’s a lower standard charge for usage and again, another standard usage fee for the weekend. On top of that, we receive an electric bill every 2 months instead of monthly. With all all that in mind, everything we do has to be done with conservation in mind, not because I want to “Hug a tree” and save Mother Earth… I do not worry about such things but rather because I don’t want to have remortgage my home just have money for things lights, TV’s and the like!! We too can get very warm during the summer months, on May 31/11 we topped out at 98 for the day and I refused to turn the AC on until 1900PM, man was that hot

  7. I am curious which MCE IR receiver(s) you are using?

I use the USB receiver that came with my SIIG and a harmony 880 remote, but on occasion the receiver will freeze (red light stays on) and I have to unplug it to get it work again. I can move the mouse to wake up my HTPC, but that is annoying,

I am not positive if this is a bios, driver, or hardware issue, but I am curious if you have had better experience with any particular receiver.

    • For all but one HTPC I use the original Microsoft MCE USB IR receiver that came bundled with an MCE remote. For the other, it is a similar device called Anywhere MCE remote and IR receiver…I believe I got it from Newegg or Amazon, but it operates identically.

I experienced the issue you are having once and it was due to the USB on my motherboard. It implemented the XFast USB Technology by ASRock and it did not work correctly until I installed the supplied drivers/software provided with it. It used standard USB drivers prior, but it often froze and was unresponsive until unplugged or rebooted, as you say. Depending on what you are using, you may want to look into special drivers or updated motherboard chipset drivers from the manufacturer.
