More channel rows in the Media Center guide.

By | January 5, 2011

EPGBy default, there are seven rows in the Media Center TV guide – each row for a designated channel to display its listings.  However, if you are on some super duper cable subscription that has hundreds of channels to scroll through, adding just a few more may cut down on how many pages you have to go through before finding what you want to watch.  By following these directions, you will be able to increase your guide list from seven rows, to ten.

  1. Exit Media Center, if running.
  2. Open Notepad and paste the following into it, saving it as take_ownership.reg, or something else descriptive:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 @="Take Ownership" "NoWorkingDirectory"="" @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F" "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F" @="Take Ownership" "NoWorkingDirectory"="" @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t" "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
  3. Execute the registry file you just created, allowing it to import.
  4. Launch a Windows Explorer window and go to C:\Windows\ehome and locate Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll.  Copy this file to a safe location in case you want to restore the original version at a later time.
  5. Right-click the Microsoft.MediaCenter.Shell.dll file in the ehome directory and choose to Take Ownership.
  6. Download this file to your ehome directory and run it (may need to right-click and do so as administrator), which patches the DLL for additional rows.  This is a Restorator patch file.
  7. Start Media Center, go to your Guide and enjoy an extended guide list!

Thanks to Hack7MC for several of these steps.
