Thanks ComcastCares1 for the offer, but I shouldn’t have to climb a ladder to get basic help.  My TV subscription has been canceled and everything, including installation, is to be credited to my account.  My cable didn’t even work at all the past two days - not even a crappy signal…no signal at all.  They are coming to get their equipment today.  The Digital Voice is next to go -  $10/month > $45/month in favor of T-Mobile@Home.  If someone else would move in the area, my Internet service would be next.  DSL doesn’t do it for me, so I’ll just have to wait.  250GB/month is a lot of bandwidth, but I’d rather not be limited, regardless of my usage.  I pay for service - not a bandwidth allotment.  I’ve never had much of an issue with Comcast until moving to Lawrenceville.  I’m guessing it has to do with the fact that they’re the only service provider in my area.  If we’re fed crap, they expect us to eat it or starve.

Dish Network came out yesterday and after about 3.5 hours, finished my install.  I now have America’s Top 200+locals and the SilverHD package with a DVR in the bedroom and receiver in the TV room.  The poor guy had to reinstall one dish twice to clear my trees and he did this 30ft in the air on the edge of my roof.  I got  VIP-612 DVR and VIP-211 receiver for the equipment.  So far, the signal is very good and the picture looks terrific.  The only issue I’ve encountered thus far is with the Harmony 670 remote and the VIP-612 DVR - I couldn’t get it to work at all.  I’m pretty sure, after some Googling, that it’s just set to URF remote mode and I need to change it to IR and set it to 01 for the address…or something like that.

I received my Digital Starter package from Comcast on Saturday.  I received a single DVR when I ordered two standard digital receivers.  They said it was no extra charge, so OK - I take it.

I moved the DVR to my bedroom yesterday and everything worked fine for about an hour.  Since then, I’ve lost VOD and my reception is pure crap.  The first time I called they said they would send a signal and I should be fine in 15-20 minutes.  It wasn’t fine.  After 2 hours I call back - now they want me to wait two days to see if it clears up.  Now listen to that…”wait two days”.  No thanks.

This morning I scheduled Dish Network to come on Saturday.  If the trees I have don’t pose a problem, I’ll also be cancelling Comcast that day as well.  Their phone service is soon to be replaced by T-Mobile@Home also.  If TWC, Charter or anyone else would come through here (except for DSL - it’s an option, but not one I want) I could ditch them altogether.

After continued problems with my old i8600, I was able to talk my wife into allowing me to put linux on it this weekend.  She only wanted to be able to go online, check email, print and probably get pictures off her camera - which I assured her were all things she could do with linux installed on there.  No resistance at all…I think she was just tired of how badly Windows runs on that thing anymore to care.

So, I downloaded Ubuntu desktop 8.0.4.1 (Hardy Heron) and completed the installation on Saturday.  Except for getting the network printer installed (I forgot), it seems to be working great again.  The last time I tried it on there I had issues with the Intel Pro 2100 wireless and some kind of certificate or seperate driver that needed to be downloaded for commercial purposes.  Even then I couldn’t get the security side of things going.  Now, it’s as easy as it is in Windows.

I also signed up for the digital starter package from Comcast today so that we can get some regular TV action.  Having a good movie collection is nice, but sometimes you just want to watch Discovery/A&E/The History Channel or so…ya’ know?  They’re coming Saturday morning to install.

I also scheduled our first meeting with a pool installation company.  They’re coming Wednesday evening to take a first look at our back yard and get us started on the getting a pool installed.  We’re having some trees removed next month, so hopefully we can get started on this sometime by the beginning of next year.

Other than sending out that bad Seagate drive for an RMA replacement, that’s about all that’s going on.

Sometimes, there doesn’t need to be anything special to post about - like now.

I found that I won’t need a new cooler for my rebuilt quad system.  I ended up taking the board out of the case and rotating the heatsink 90° so that the fan was blowing upwards - out the 140mm exhaust mounted in the top of the case.  I also noticed that the mounting screws in the base were placed away from the cores when mounted this way.  That pretty much tells me that the unit I’m using isn’t capable of universal mounting for 775 sockets.  My temps dropped >30°C at idle and are at >60°C under full load while encoding with x264.  One core went as high as 89°C before this change.  I’m happy since I don’t have to waste another $40 on another heatsink.

I hope Fry’s has another combo special on their Celeron 430 tomorrow/this weekend.  I’m really wanting to grab one so that I can swap out CPUs on my unRAID server with it.  It just doesn’t need dual cores - it doesn’t even support them yet.  Even if it did support them, I doubt it would benefit me anyway since I don’t do anything but file serving with it.  I want to use the E1200 in it to replace that aging Pentium-M I’m using as a WSUS server.  I have the P5B-MX and 2GB DDR2 standing by collecting dust now.  I also want to go with x64 2003 Server this time.  I’ve never really used any 64-bit OS at home before and this would be a good time for it.

If I can get that $50 combo, I can use the leftover ECS 945P board it comes with to replace my son’s craptacular GeForce 7-series board.  It would be OK if it didn’t have only a single-channel memory controller.  I eventually want to get another E1200 or Celeron 430 for it as well.  The D805 in it is just a dog.

On the Media Center front, the OpenMediaLibrary team released the first public beta of their OML video library plugin.  I installed it on my test box and took a look and it’s very nice.  I can’t really use it, however, since it doesn’t support individual XML files (which I recently switched to), nor does it work well with layered directory structures.  I’m sure it could be set up to do so, but no way am I starting over - yet again!  Besides, MyMovies is going to have their first introductory MCML version out in the next couple of weeks or three.  I’m still updating that database so that I can use it again if it astounds me.  I’m feeling lazy today, so check my other posts for relative links to OML and whatnot.

I’ve really been neglecting this site, but I just can’t help it. Ever since the painters finished with the house, I’ve been scrambling to get things back into place. I’ve also spent a lot of time outside the house working on the yard and landscaping…it’s a mess. My fish tanks have also required a lot of attention - especially my fantail goldfish tank, as of late. I had expected a mini-cycle, but was not prepared to deal with a full-blown take cycling. The ammonia levels have really been going through the roof as I underestimated how big those fish have gotten and the amount of waste they produce. I had to replace the bio-bags on my filters after transplanting them and it just ruined my good bacteria levels. pH is still low, so I think they’ll be OK so long as I don’t neglect checking the levels and doing some water changes. Oddly enough, the tank full of platys that had over 40 fish died is the one that had the mini-cycle and is doing terrificly now. I’ll probably move a few of them to Joseph’s new 10G tank this weekend. It’s been running for about a week and is probably ready for a few fish.

Anyway, I just placed my order with X10 and pretty much got everything that was on my preliminary list from last week. However, I did decide to add some additional wall switch modules (they were on sale 4-for-3, so I got 8) and the RCA Universal Home Control Kit with ActiveHome Pro. It was only $20 and will allow me to control everything by PC, so I figure it will be very handy from work and a near necessity once I start expanding. I just need to pick up a couple of timers for my fish tanks now so I don’t have to remember to turn out their lights every night. No sense in getting X10 for that though. I wouldn’t be able to install an X10 outlet now anyway (once I get pictures up, you’ll see why).

This weekend will mostly be spent getting the home theater rewired, moving my son’s room (LAN drop and surround speakers installed) and some touch up painting. There’s also a lot of odds-and-ends to take care of (door stops, installing blinds, unpacking leftover boxes from our move, cleaning, etc.). I want to get as much done as possible before my grandparents arrive next weekend…my parents are probably coming the weekend after them, so I’m not going to get to do a whole lot for the rest of the month (not complaining, it’s just fact).

I’m also all set to purchase unRAID first thing next month. The Seagates have dropped to $199 at Fry’s, so it’s an awesome time to have a TB-dedicated setup. I have decided to forgo the Pro version for the Plus version, however. Plus gives me support to 6 drives and I can’t get past four without getting a new SATA card and external enclosure - not to mention the drives. That’s a considerable amount of cash, which will take me a while to come up with. So I figure if I ever need to expand beyond 6 drives, I’ll just upgrade when the time comes. I need the $30 saved now more than I’ll need it later.

Adding that 4th drive will allow me to finally set up my data structure how I originally envisioned while freeing up some much needed space on the second data drive. It fills up fast considering it holds all my TV episodes, box sets/series and children’s movies. I’ll be splitting off the children’s movies, which is about 300GB by itself. That particular drive is almost at 75% capacity right now, so I need the space. My other disk is nearly at 60%, but doesn’t fill up nearly as fast since it’s mainly individual DVD titles, and I don’t buy that often. I have increased my encoding bitrates since moving to unRAID, however, so I’m going to have to keep a close eye on things. I’ll probably use the new disk as an overflow, if I need to. The children’s folder doesn’t grow very fast either. I’m glad unRAID is so flexible that I don’t have to worry about what to do…I can just throw disks in when I need and put data wherever - the shares will still show me what I want to see - how I want to see it!

Mar 26

I finally got around to getting my home theater equipment added in my projects list.  I’ll get some pictures up soon.  Painters started on the inside of our house today, so I’ll probably take a bunch of pictures after they’re finished and everything is put into place.  That will probably slow things down for the site a bit, however, since I can’t stay at home until they finish.  Hopefully everything will be done by week’s end.

Mar 21

We were supposed to begin painting the entire insides of our house today, but we’ve postponed it until Monday. It’s made for a busy last couple of days and the weekend won’t get any better.

Yesterday was spent taking down and cleaning two 30g fish tanks, unhooking my entire living room entertainment center and moving a couple of bedrooms-worth of furniture to different rooms in the house. Today, I’m sore.

The good news is that it is going to allow me to do a much-needed cleanup of the mess of wires that was behind my entertainment cabinet. After disconnecting everything, I took some mesh sheathing I had lying around and bundled my speaker, video and power cables into three separate bundles. All that’s left is to get a double-gang box for the hole in my wall so that I can mount the wire management plate. I had cut the hole too large to screw directly to the wall, so hopefully I can fit an outlet box in there somehow to make it usable. Doesn’t really matter since the cabinet covers it anyway.

I still need to figure out what I’m going to do with the switch panel, switches, modem and HDHomeRun in the office though. When I wired the house I used it as the master patch panel and I don’t really want to take down the entire world for a week. Especially since I’ll be living in the basement while they’re there. I guess I can take down what is not going to be used and let them paint around things. I’ll probably tape up the CAT5e jacks myself since I don’t want them removing them and, considering they use spray guns, I don’t want them ruined. I’ll figure it out when that time comes. There’s not very many jacks anyway.

I’ve been spending a lot of time continuing the update of MyMovies to convert everything I have from the custom inputs to the Web Service. For most, it would take a few minutes to do it all in a batch, but I still want to retain my front cover posters instead of the front cover DVD image. Plus, I make a few subtle changes here and there…I’m just picky like that, but I like what I like. I’m almost done though…only around 50 or so titles left (I think).
