On March 3rd, 2008, theHTPC.net was born as my interest in home theater computing was in its infancy and the rise of living rooms being controlled by computing devices was becoming more than just a niche.
It’s hard to believe that it has been over 10 years. So hard to believe, that I completely missed this site’s birthday by over 7 months. A lot has changed in that time. I no longer have any PC-based media devices controlling my televisions. Now, it’s a couple of nVidia Shields and other Android-based devices over an AT&T U-Verse network for television. I use both Emby and Plex to deliver local content that is still housed on my unRAID server, but there has been a dramatic increase in Netflix and Amazon Prime usage. The biggest change is my decline of interest in HTPC-related technology. I’ve become someone who would rather watch when I want and do less fiddling with what delivers it.
My life revolves more around my family and what I do with them. My favorite past times have moved towards the outdoors. We now have owned a 35′ Jayco travel trailed for over a year and love to go camping. My 3 boys are growing and life has gravitated towards football and baseball, where they play and I coach. My daughter started cheerleading this year, as well. Wrestling will be a new one that begins this winter for my 8th-grader, once football is over (they are expected to win the championship this years as playoffs are in full-swing).
I’ve also found that I really enjoy doing home restoration projects, like hardwood flooring, painting, landscaping, etc. So, I’ve started a nice collection of power tools and whatnot…I expect I’ll always be one who likes to tinker on something.
An issue that keeps popping up for me every month, however, is paying the hosting fee for this site. It’s not much, but I’m tired of doing it. I haven’t posted anything of worth in a few years and today marks the first time in at least 2 years I’ve even logged into my admin panel. I feel it’s time to take a final backup, download it, then hit the power switch for good.
Writing this is more for me than anything else…I imagine there will be next to no one who reads this as the site has fallen off everyone’s radar by now. I had to say goodbye as this site was a big part of my life for several years.
I can’t say for sure when I’ll officially pull the plug, but it will likely be soon. Finding time to actually go in and pull everything is an issue in itself. I’ll likely find that time at work one day and then just do it. The domain will remain mine, but the hosting through ChicagoVPS will go away. They’ve been solid the past few years after a rocky start.
Anyway, goodbye friends. Goodbye theHTPC.net
