…I’ll go ahead and do it now.
The previous post explained my situation about the need for a replacement for my failing WRT54G and that I decided to go with the Fry’s FR-300RTR (re-badged D-Link DIR-615-E1). Well, once I got home and got a few things out of the way, I decided to give the “Emergency Room” firmware flash procedure outlined here a try. I was attempting this with my C2Q system, connected directly to the router with a temporary IP in the 192.168.0.X range, as needed. I tried flashing with Google Chrome, IE8 and finally installed Firefox without any luck. I was able to get to the “Emergency Room” loader, but once I went to upload the firmware, I was instantly met with a 404 error each time.
However, I was somewhat prepared to sidestep a little disappointment because I spent quite a bit of time yesterday reading various threads at the DD-WRT forums about many others’ attempts in flashing this router and the different methods that were used to garner success. One, was to simply try other systems until one worked as network cards appear to have something to do with it also. So, that’s what I did…I hooked up my son’s system which has an old 100Mbit integrated NIC and tried uploading the v2.4-SP2 firmware with that. Whatever the reason, it did work.

Success!
I don’t know how long this router will last and having had it only a day, I have no idea how it’s going to perform down the stretch. However, for $30, it’s a pretty good deal for something that runs DD-WRT.
After battling regular wireless outages over the past several months, I finally bought and installed the replacement to my beloved (and legendary)
